Physical Education is an important subject taught in schools around the world to promote healthy physical development among students. A physical education teacher encourages students on the importance of a healthy lifestyle through exercise and active life.
People who are interested in sports and want to be part of the education sector can pursue a Bachelor of Physical Education. Bachelor of Physical Education or B.P.Ed is a graduation degree in physical education. In some countries, it is also called bachelor in Kinesiology. It is a 2 or 4-year course in which people are trained to become a teacher in physical education. Topics such as sports science, outdoor education, various forms of exercise, outdoor and indoor games and athletics are covered in this degree.
In India, Generally this course is known as B.PH.Ed or B.P.E. The duration ofthis course is two years which can be done after completing graduation. Certain colleges in India provide integrated bachelors in which 3 to 4 years of graduation are provided in physical education. The qualification for this integrated B.Ed is 10th and +2 where the 12th is completed with physical education subject of choice if possible.
Some Indian universities that provide B.P.E are: Mahatma Gandhi University, Calicut University, Banaras Hindu University, Lucknow University, etc.
Many colleges have entrance exams for admissions of this course.  The eligibility required to pursue Bachelor in Physical Education are:

  • For the 2 years graduation course, a person must complete graduation in any subject with 50% aggregate. For the integrated course the person must be 10th and +2 qualified with an aggregate of 50%.

  • Certain colleges have certain physical criteria and personal interview round that must be passed by the candidate.

 

  • Generally, those who wish to pursue a bachelor’s in physical education must have sports achievements or must be active in sports person.

 
B.P.E can be pursued both in regular as well as in distance mode from distance education universities like Alagappa University, IGNOU, etc.
After the course completion, one can find opportunities in a wide range of career fields such as physical education teacher, sports coach, fitness trainer, Gym trainer, Sports instructor, Yoga trainer, etc.
