Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is an advanced doctoral research qualification, designed for students who have already completed postgraduate degree. A PhD student has to independently research an original topic with the support of at least one supervisor (an academic at your university with relevant expertise and experience) and has to present an original thesis work. PhD qualification is available for all subjects which are recognized by accredited universities.

Candidates who have cleared the M.Phil. course work with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade ‘B’ in the UGC 7-point scale (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) and successfully completing the M.Phil. Degree shall be eligible to proceed to do research work leading to the Ph. D. Degree in the same Institution in an integrated programme. A relaxation of 5% of marks, from 55% to 50%, or an equivalent relaxation of grade, may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/differently-abled and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the Commission from time to time.
Entrance Exam: PhD applicants in India are required to complete a Research Eligibility Test (RET); this is a written exam to evaluate subject knowledge and research aptitude.
Selection Process: Candidates who score 50% marks for the entrance exam will be eligible for the Ph.D. The candidates who have M.Phil/NET/ UGCSIR/JRF/ GATE/ SLET/Teacher Fellow are not required to attend the written examination.
Research proposal: The topic that you have selected will be evaluated by the University. If the topic is acceptable you are eligible for the next step.
Presentation: Candidates who are selected must showcase their research idea in a presentation before an esteemed committee. The way you present the idea is critical to the selection process.
Presentation review: If the committee thinks that you are contributing something new to the world of knowledge, they will accept your research proposal and grant you permission to do your Ph.D. under the university.
Higher Education – Research and Teaching: You can continue your career within the Higher Education sector, applying for posts as a Scientist/professor, or to carry out research in the area of subject knowledge that you’ve studied and been trained in.
Higher Education – Management and Administration: you can apply for posts in university administration, careers advice or fundraising. You can manage research centre in your area of academic subject expertise.
Research, Publishing and Consultancy: You can continue to work within the same area of subject knowledge as your PhD, applying for posts such as a researcher working in a lab for a private company, or in a government department.
Professional: You can apply for posts in another sector where you won’t be using the specific academic subject knowledge that you gained from your PhD discipline either.
