The Master of Philosophy (M Phil) is an advanced postgraduate degree. An M Phil typically includes a taught portion and a significant research portion, during which a thesis project is conducted under supervision. An M Phil may be awarded to postgraduate students after completing taught coursework and one to two years of original research, which may also serve as a provisional enrollment for a PhD programme.
Indian universities offer M Phil degrees as the most advanced master’s degree in the fields of arts, science and humanities. The duration is typically two years long and includes both a taught portion and an extensive research portion. Several universities offer enrollment in their integrated M Phil–PhD program and M Phil degree holders are usually exempted from some of the doctoral coursework requirement.

To pursue M Phil, one needs to have a Master’s degree in science, arts or engineering. Candidates need to acquire 55% marks in the subject chosen for M Phil course or an allied subject at the postgraduate level to be considered eligible for the course.A written test maybe conducted to assess the candidate’s knowledge.
Those who qualify in the written test will be required to appear in an interview. Certain institute’s waiver entrance test if the candidate has qualified in NET or equivalent national level examination. The admission procedure and mode of selection for admission to Master of Philosophy (M Phil) through distance learning however, may vary from one Institute to another. Some Institutes have specified added eligibility criteria for admitting candidates into their distance learning M Phil program.
