The National Institute of Open Schooling abbreviated as NIOS is the board of education works under the Government of India. It was established in the year 1989. It was formed with an objective to provide education to all.

It acts as a national board that conducts examinations for Secondary and Senior Secondary examinations. It also provides secondary education course, senior secondary education course, vocational education course and life enrichment programs through open and distance learning mode.

NIOS has many advantages over other boards. It gives distance education programme at 10th and 12th level. National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) unlike other boards provides facilities of On Demand examination. On Demand examination is an option that avails students to clear their failed subjects in the same year of their public board exams.

The board unlike CBSE and CICSE provides nine chances to clear examinations.

Another notable advantage of National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) is that the board sets no upper age limit for acquiring the courses provided by them. This factor will be a great advantage for those who had to stop their studies because of some inevitable reasons and find no way to resume their studies later.

Also if candidate couldn’t completes the course they have taken, within the stipulated time they can take re-admission and continue their course. In such cases, National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) provides facility to credits of up to four subjects will be transferred.

Unlike Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE), National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) offers its students a chance to choose the subjects they like.

National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) also offers course in three different languages including English, Hindi and Urdu
